Project Overview

To build on the land of ancestors is to reconnect with legacy, emotion, and heritage. This project was exactly that — the creation of an ancestral holiday home for the three Bafna brothers, situated in the tranquil village of Mokalsar, surrounded by the Aravalli ranges. Envisioned as a getaway from urban life, the home reflects a deep-rooted connection to family traditions while accommodating modern-day needs. The design replaces an old family house with twin bungalows, built on the same site — incorporating Vaastu principles, local materials, and climatic responsiveness.

Planning & Design Approach

Breaking away from the traditional courtyard typology common in Rajasthan, we opted for a rectangular layout with all four sides open — a rare opportunity in this region. This layout promotes cross ventilation, natural airflow, and a sense of openness.
Key design features include:
• A show-stopper staircase in Jodhpur stone that leads up to the terrace, adding a sculptural quality to the space.
• Stone masonry walls that retain thermal mass, releasing heat at night and cooling interiors during the day.
• Reclaimed materials like old wooden doors, windows, and stone rubble reused to retain the soul of the original home.
• A white mosaic terrace floor to reduce heat gain and improve thermal comfort.

Climate-Responsive Architecture

Given Rajasthan’s extreme climate, the home incorporates:
• Wooden shutters to minimize direct solar heat gain.
• Outdoor gathering spaces designed specifically for winter evenings, ideal for bonfires and family time.

Baithak – The Heart of the Home

The baithak is a traditionally inspired, cozy gathering space — integral to Rajasthani homes. It reflects ancestral customs, encouraging family bonding and storytelling across generations, with a design language that’s deeply rooted in heritage.

Living Room & Dining

Serving as the social hub of the house, this spacious area supports gatherings with extended family and guests. A mix of traditional tones and modern utility creates a welcoming and versatile space. A contemporary kitchen, designed with modern usage in mind. Its ergonomic layout, ample storage, and easy-to-clean materials make it both efficient and elegant — perfectly suited for family use during extended stays. Bedrooms are designed for comfort and simplicity, furnished with essentials and softened by ambient lighting. Washrooms are minimal, functional, and modern in execution, allowing for easy maintenance.
